tales from the bottle
Thursday, April 10th, 2008I was listening to one of Vera’s older podcasts and she mentioned her love for vodka. It got me thinking about my own affinity for alcohol.
When I was in Poland, studying architecture, we looked for any excuse to have a party. Even though my birthday was in January and we were in Warsaw from February to May, I made plans to have a birthday party. We went to the Pewex to get the alcohol as the marines would be supplying the beer. I didn’t drink much hard liquor except whisky and cokes which the Poles mistook for scotch and coke. So I got some Scotch, Johnny Walker Red, some rum, Captain Morgan Black and some vodka. At that time, 1987, average vodka sold for $1 per liter. I decided to splurge and got the $3 vodka. What I didn’t realize is that the $3 vodka was 180 proof. 180 proof means 90% alcohol. No one would drink more than one drink of this rot gut.
Fred, our professor, and had passed out in the adjacent room, someone thought it would be funny to paint his forehead, with white out. Vodka helped remove it.
Some weeks later, I received a care package from my mom which included some tums and kool-aid. We found the 180 proof vodka to be a very cool kool-aid helper and we drank quite a bit on May Day when we were told to stay in our dorm room out of trouble. Apparently, the Poles tended to celebrate a bit too much on May Day and many are arrested.
